By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Institute of Archaeology issued an advisory this morning, Tuesday, September 23, announcing the temporary closure of the Nohoch Che’en Archaeological Reserve. The closure, effective as of 7:10 am, is a precautionary measure due to rising river conditions in the area.
The notice, shared with the public and tour operators, stated that the reserve will remain closed until further notice. This is a crucial safety measure, as the site is popular for water-based activities, including cave tubing tours that navigate the underground river systems.
While Nohoch Che’en is closed, the Institute of Archaeology confirmed that all other archaeological reserves across the country remain open for visitors.
The advisory also included a strong warning for tour operators and tour guides, urging them to “remain alert to changing weather conditions and exercise caution, particularly during water-based activities.” This is a critical reminder for all who work in the tourism sector, as Belize is currently experiencing a period of unpredictable weather that can quickly impact rivers and other bodies of water.
The Institute of Archaeology has committed to closely monitoring the conditions at Nohoch Che’en and will provide updates as necessary. Visitors and tour operators are encouraged to stay informed by checking for official announcements from the Institute before planning any trips to the reserve.
