By Aaron Humes: William “Danny” Mason, recently found guilty of two counts of kidnapping, appeared alone in the High Court on Monday, revealing a stark contrast between his claims of influential connections and the reality of his situation. The sentencing hearing, presided over by Justice Nigel Pilgrim, took place without character witnesses, leaving Mason to make his mitigation plea solo.

During the proceedings, Mason, who maintains his innocence, voiced allegations against the Belize Central Prison, claiming that his human rights have been violated. He asserted that he was denied access to his legal counsel, endured unjust solitary confinement, and spent seven of his nine years incarcerated without reading materials.

Mason also dramatically levelled accusations against a senior member of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), alleging that this individual threatened a prison staff member to extract information concerning Mason and two other high-profile individuals, murder accused Elmer Nah and attorney Oscar Selgado, who was convicted of abetment to murder. Furthermore, he alleged that the Belize Police Department suppressed crucial evidence from his four confiscated cell phones, claiming the devices would substantiate his communication with the alleged kidnapping victim, Lloyd Friesen, before his arrest.

Mason, addressing the court with resolve, asserted, “I will not beg for mercy because I am not guilty of any crime.”

The DPP was present but did not directly address Mason’s allegations during the hearing. Instead, she requested an adjournment to prepare written submissions for the court. She also submitted the victim impact report from Lloyd and Rosie Friesen, detailing their horrifying experiences at the hands of the armed kidnappers. The couple reported being taped and transported against their will to Mason’s farm, further describing the severe psychological trauma and financial difficulties they faced, ultimately leading them to flee the country.

The court hearing concluded with the judge adjourning the sentencing until July 14.
