By Hugh O’Brien: In a major decision announced by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, students at the Belmopan Comprehensive School will no longer have to pay tuition or fees at the new academic year which commences in August.
A statement issued by the Ministry said it is thrilled to announce “government’s commitment to ensuring that barriers to education are removed or reduced for all students…We are delighted that Belmopan Comprehensive School, the largest secondary school in the country and a renowned educational institution in our capital city, has been included in this year’s expansion of the Belize Education Upliftment Project.
Apart from no longer having to pay any tuition or fees, Belmopan Comprehensive students will also receive support in the form of uniforms (for first-year students), transportation, healthy meals, and improved school infrastructure and resources.
Belmopan Comprehensive School, with a student population of around 1,000, once boasted being the best and most prestigious secondary school not only in the Cayo District but in the country. The high standards of the institution and its excellence in education was particularly evident during the 22 year tenure from 1977 to 1999 of Principal Phillip Michael Price who passed away October last year.
