By Zoila Palma: On October 6, 2026, Prime Minister John Briceño said that the government has introduced a new online portal for educational assistance, allowing students and families to apply for support based on need without having to visit their Area Representative.
The PM said that this is part of his administration’s efforts to put more money in the pockets of Belizean families through measures including free education and education assistance programmes.
Briceño said approximately 80 percent of students at the high school and University of Belize levels receive some form of assistance.
“Minister Fonseca set up a portal for educational assistance so you can apply and get assistance through that portal based on need. So, now you don’t have to go to your area rep for assistance,” Briceño said.
The new system represents a shift from a longstanding practice in which families would visit the offices of their respective Area Representatives to request educational assistance.
Through the portal, families can instead submit applications directly for consideration based on their needs.
