By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): While most were enjoying their Christmas dinner, a local teacher was dealing with a holiday headache on Asuncion Street, Orange Walk, yesterday.
Around 6:30 p.m., police responded to a traffic accident involving a burgundy 2016 Chevrolet Equinox and a beige 2001 Ford Escape. The Equinox, driven by Karin Castillo, 45, a well-known local teacher, was heading toward Santa Familia Street when the Ford Escape suddenly collided with her rear left side.
The impact was so significant it detached the Equinox’s rear bumper and caused extensive damage to the wheel. However, the real “gift” was waiting in the driver’s seat of the Ford Escape. When officers approached the driver, 42-year-old Roberto Anibar Fuentes, they didn’t smell Christmas pine, they smelled a “strong aroma” of alcohol.
Not only was Fuentes allegedly driving under the influence, but further checks revealed his Ford Escape was not insured.
Fuentes was whisked away to the Orange Walk Police Station, where he willingly provided a urine sample for analysis. He spent the remainder of his Christmas in a cell pending formal charges for “Driving a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of drinks or drugs.”
