NICH supports Community collaboration at San Pedro Columbia Village, Toledo

By Zoila Palma: On Thursday, December 11, 2025, the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) officially handed over a new motorcycle to support the San Pedro Columbia Police Sub-Station.

“This initiative is expected to enhance patrol capability and support more efficient response efforts, as well as reinforce the shared commitment to safety in and around the community, including at the Lubaantun Archaeological Reserve,” NICH noted.

Attendees included Oscar Requeña, Minister of Rural Transformation and Area Representative of Toledo West; Eluide Miller, NICH Administrator, Director, Dr. Melissa Badillo, Superintendent Brent Hamilton, Officer in Charge of Toledo; the Chairman of San Pedro Columbia Village; and the village Alcalde.

Superintendent Hamilton expressed their appreciation, emphasizing that the motorcycle will greatly enhance their policing efforts and responsiveness.

“NICH recognizes that safeguarding cultural spaces and supporting community well-being works best through collaboration and partnership. Today’s handing over is a reflection of that collaboration — between the police, community leadership, and our institution — to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for residents, staff, and visitors alike. Strong partnerships remain central to NICH’s work, enabling us to fulfill our mandate while fostering shared responsibility across communities,” NICH added.

The donation was made possible through the support of Francis Fonseca, Minister responsible for Culture, under whose leadership the National Institute of Culture and History continues to advance initiatives that strengthen community outreach and heritage protection.
