By Zoila Palma: The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) has congratulated the Benque House of Culture on reaching its 25th anniversary, recognizing the institution’s longstanding contribution to cultural and historical preservation in Benque Viejo del Carmen. The milestone was celebrated on September 7, 2026, with NICH President Albert Vaughan in attendance.
NICH also extended special recognition to the Community of Artists for Cultural & Historical Endeavours (CACHE), which was organized in January 1999 and served as the founding organization of the Benque House of Culture.
NICH said CACHE’s partnership has played an important role in nurturing and promoting the town’s vibrant cultural heritage.
As part of the Jubilee celebration and in keeping with this year’s theme, “Rooted in Culture,” 25 trees were planted to mark the 25 years of cultural and historical work. The initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Forestry Department’s Greening Belize Initiative, stakeholders and members of the local community.
NICH said the tree planting symbolizes Benque Viejo del Carmen’s deep cultural roots and the shared commitment to preserving and promoting Belizean culture and history for future generations.
