By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Nicaraguan national living in Belize was spared jail time on Tuesday after pleading guilty to drug paraphernalia possession and assaulting a police officer.
Tyrone Angus, 30, a Belize City resident, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #8, where he admitted to three offenses: possession of a utensil used for smoking crack cocaine, resisting arrest, and aggravated assault upon a police officer.
The court heard that Angus was found with a 2.5-inch glass crack pipe and became combative during his arrest.
In sentencing, Magistrate Black considered Angus’s early guilty plea, lack of prior convictions, expression of remorse, and the fact that he did not waste the court’s time. As a result, he was handed a non-custodial sentence.
Angus was fined $150 plus $5 court costs for possession of the crack pipe, $200 plus $5 for resisting arrest, and $300 plus $5 for the assault charge. He must pay the first two fines by August 8, 2025, or face two months in prison for each. The third fine must be paid by August 29, 2025, or he will serve three months behind bars.
