By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The National Health Insurance program has issued a strong public statement distancing itself from growing speculation linking its procurement process to the murder of Belmopan physician Dr. Naun Bonilla.
In a media release issued on June 8, NHI said attempts by some media outlets and social media commentators to connect the organization’s contracting activities to the murder investigation are “inaccurate, unfounded and misleading.”
The statement comes as police continue investigating the killing of Dr. Bonilla and after two persons were charged in connection with the case.
According to NHI, Belmopan Medical Laboratory Services submitted an expression of interest as part of the organization’s expansion into the Cayo District. However, officials said that during negotiations it became known that an ongoing legal dispute existed between the laboratory’s two co-owners.
NHI says both parties were informed that no contract would be signed with the laboratory while the legal dispute remained unresolved.
The agency further clarified that reports suggesting a lucrative signed contract existed are false and emphasized that no contract was ever finalized or executed between NHI and Belmopan Medical Laboratory Services.
NHI concluded by urging the public and media organizations to rely on verified facts when reporting on matters involving the institution and its operations.
