NHC monitors first possible tropical system of Atlantic hurricane season

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The National Hurricane Center is monitoring the first potential tropical system of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season as a trough of low pressure near northeastern Mexico could move back over water later this week.

As of Monday morning, the system was still inland over northeastern Mexico and producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Forecasters say development is not expected immediately while the disturbance remains over land and drifts near northeastern Mexico and southern Texas.

However, the system could move northeastward and re-emerge over the northwestern Gulf by late Tuesday or Wednesday, where conditions may become more favorable for some development around midweek.

The National Hurricane Center gives the system a 20 percent chance of development over the next two days and a 30 percent chance over the next seven days.

Even if the system does not become a tropical depression or tropical storm, forecasters warn that heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and gusty winds could affect parts of eastern and southern Texas and Louisiana this week.

For Belize, there is no direct threat from the disturbance at this time. The system is far to the north and west of the country, but it serves as a reminder that the Atlantic hurricane season is now active and conditions can change quickly.

The Atlantic basin has been quiet since the season began on June 1, while the eastern Pacific has already produced several tropical storms.

Belizeans are reminded that hurricane season runs through November 30, with the most active period usually occurring from mid-August through October. Families, businesses, and communities should continue reviewing emergency plans, securing important documents, and staying informed through official weather updates.
