NGOs unite to endorse Janelle Chanona for continued Senate representation

Posted: Thursday, March 13, 2025. 10:35 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The collective of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Belize have officially endorsed Janelle Chanona to continue serving as the Senator representing NGOs in the Upper House of Belize. This announcement follows the Belize Network of Non-Governmental Organizations (BNN) issuing a call for nominations, which resulted in unanimous endorsements for Chanona.

Since assuming office in March 2022, Chanona, vice-president of Oceana Belize, has been a prominent advocate for NGOs, leveraging her position to amplify their voices within government discussions. The BNN Board expressed gratitude to the NGOs for actively participating in this democratic process, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in selecting their representative.

In her acceptance of the endorsements, Senator-elect Chanona remarked, “It has been my honor and privilege to serve as your voice in the corridors of power. Together, we reaffirm our commitment to collaboration and cooperation with the Government of Belize, to leverage the strengths of our collective voice, skills, and resources to shape governance proposals that benefit all Belizeans, especially women, youth, and marginalized groups.” She emphasized the importance of defending democracy and promoting sustainable human development as key priorities for her continued service.

As part of the next steps, the BNN Board will formally request the appointment of Janelle Chanona from the Governor General, in accordance with Section 61 4(1) of the Belize Constitution. The official swearing-in is set to occur during the first Senate sitting of the new parliamentary session.

Chanona’s is the first of 13 Senatorial appointments to be made to the new National Assembly.
