Newly appointed Ministers of State to assist and support Ministries

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Recently, the Prime Minister of Belize promoted 3 Area Representatives to Ministers of State.

The newly appointed Ministers of State include Jorge Espat of Cayo West, Alex Balona of Cayo Central and Marconi Leal of Belize Rural North.

Chairman of the UDP Michael Peyrefitte questioned the move and said that the decision was to keep everyone happy “at any cost.”

However, Prime Minister John Briceno has indicated that the newly appointed Ministers of State will assist and support the respective Ministers and Ministries.

“It is not costing much to the voters or the taxpayers, why? Because they have been chairpersons of House Committees and that had increased their salary. Now they have become ministers of state, that is going to be reduced so they don’t have an imbalance in the amount of monies they collected along with their colleagues. What is important is that they would be able to provide more work and do good work for the people in not only their consistencies but in the country to help the ministers,” the Prime Minister said.

Briceno said that the Government needs to be able to get the work done.
