By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 32-year-old American tourist was fined on Monday after pleading guilty to importing marijuana into Belize over the weekend.
Delon Junior Charles, a telecommunications agent from New York, was caught with 22 grams of cannabis in his carry-on luggage upon arrival at the Philip Goldson International Airport on Saturday, July 12. He was charged with importation of a controlled drug and appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Ludlow Black this morning.
Charles admitted to carrying the marijuana, claiming it was two small bags totaling no more than 7 grams. He insisted the weight recorded by authorities included the packaging. He told the court it was a “bad mistake” and blamed his lapse in judgment on not traveling for 17 years.
For his guilty plea, Charles was fined $305, which he was ordered to pay immediately or face three months in prison. Magistrate Black noted that although Charles had no prior convictions and saved the court’s time by pleading early, importation of drugs is a serious and prevalent offense in Belize. Charles is expected to leave the country on Wednesday, July 16.
