By Aaron Humes: New President of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB), Ella Waight, has issued her thanks to delegates and attendees of the recent annual general meeting of the Congress in San Ignacio.

Waight succeeds Luis Martinez, who continues as a trustee for the Congress, for a two-year term.

In a statement, Waight said, “As the newly elected President of the NTUCB, I am humbled by the trust you have placed in me to lead our congress. I do not take this responsibility lightly and fully acknowledge the challenges it entails. However, I am confident that, with the unwavering support and collective effort of all our union members, we will effect positive change and improve the lives of workers across Belize…There will be a transitional period during which Brother Luke and I will work closely to ensure the smooth handover of pending tasks and internal updates. The dedication, love, and passion for unionism remain strong as we continue our shared work for the betterment of Belizean workers.”

And congratulations have come from Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow, who says the Congress and its executive have earned “the trust and confidence of Belizean labourers as their advocates for better working conditions, employment benefits, universal living wage and accountability in government and business administration.”

A future UDP administration says it will work with the Congress on such issues as the Occupational Health and Safety Bill, strengthening of the Whistleblowers and Finance and Audit Act, full implementation of UNCAC, citizenship security, poverty, public healthcare, access to education, economic development, food security, constitution reform, campaign finance reform, and good governance.

The executive is rounded out by Jorge Mejia, 1st Vice President; Clifford Martinez, 2nd Vice President; Phillip Tate, General Secretary; Ayona Shantell Ramirez, Assistant General Secretary; Jaqueline Medrano-Cruz, Treasurer; Shane Reneau, Assistant Treasurer; Sharon Fraser, Auditor; Karim Thompson, Councilor; Luis Luke Martinez and Roy Briceno; Trustees, and Trisha Perez, Director of Gender Affairs. The post of Director of Education which Waight previously held remains vacant.
