By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Ministry of Health and Wellness has moved forward with the operationalisation of a National Post-Market Surveillance System for medicines and vaccines.
The work took place during a three day workshop last week supported by the Pan American Health Organization, bringing together officials from government agencies, health facility representatives, academia, private sector specialists and patient organisations.
The aim is to strengthen Belize’s capacity to detect, assess, investigate, communicate and respond to safety and quality concerns related to medicines and vaccines.
Belize recently became a full member of the WHO Programme for International Drug Monitoring and has advanced the use of pharmacovigilance tools including VigiFlow and VigiMobile, along with national reporting forms and pathways.
With PAHO support, the country is building an integrated approach that combines monitoring of medicine and vaccine safety with the detection and management of product quality issues, suspected substandard and falsified medical products, and unregistered products.
Participants examined the proposed terms of reference for the system, including its mandate, scope, functions and coordination mechanisms.
Officials stressed that an effective system depends on clearly defined responsibilities, good quality reports, timely feedback and coordination across institutions.
