New Sugar Industry Authority to be created; plans for Constitutional, electoral reform

By Aaron Humes: Following from the Wayne Piper-led Commission of Inquiry into the sugar industry, a Sugar Industry Authority will be created to lead the reform of Belize’s oldest and most prosperous industry as announced by Prime Minister John Briceño, who is directly in charge of that portfolio.

Belizeans look forward to Constitutional reform by the People’s Constitutional Commission and redistricting of electoral boundaries to be done “with deliberate speed.”

The International Court of Justice (ICJ), he reminded, will listen to Belize’s cases against Guatemala and Honduras over territory and deliver a judgment that will maintain Belize’s sovereignty and Territorial integrity. 

On the world stage, in response to “the globalization of indifference” in response to global crises from war to climate change to emergencies, Belize must be different, the P.M. urged, developing sustainability and using our voice for good.
