By Zoila Palma: On May 30, 2026, Minister Orlando Habet visited the construction site of the new Santa Familia bridge that will connect the Cayo Northeast communities directly to San Ignacio and Santa Elena Towns.
“Seeing this project take shape is truly inspiring and a testament to what can be achieved when vision, commitment, and partnership come together.
This bridge will provide safer, faster, and more reliable access for our farmers transporting their produce, our teachers and students commuting daily, and the many families and residents who travel between our villages and the Twin Towns. It represents more than just infrastructure—it is a vital link that will strengthen economic opportunities, improve access to essential services, and enhance the quality of life for thousands of residents,” Habet explained.
Habet expressed enthusiasm in the completion of the project and said that this will create new opportunities for growth, connectivity, and development for generations to come.
“Additionally, this new access route will reduce travel distances significantly—cutting approximately 6 miles for those traveling from Santa Familia to Spanish Lookout and beyond, and approximately 11 miles for commuters traveling from San Ignacio via the Iguana Creek Bridge route. This means less time on the road, lower transportation costs, and greater convenience for residents, businesses, and visitors alike,” Habet added.
Minister Habet thanked Julius Espat, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing, and Prime Minister John Briceño for their support and commitment to advancing this important project for the people of Cayo Northeast and Belize.
“This bridge stands as a symbol of progress, development, and our continued commitment to building stronger, more connected communities,” he expressed.
