Press Release
START: Subject to the provision under Section 2 of the Town Councils Act, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2020, the Honourable Minister with responsibility for Local Government, the Hon. Florencio Marin, Jr., by Order published in the Gazette, has declared new boundaries for the seven towns (Punta Gorda, Dangriga, Benque Viejo, San Ignacio/Santa Elena, Orange Walk, Corozal and San Pedro) in Belize effective April 1, 2025.
Further to the decision of Cabinet in July 2021, the Department of Local Government resumed activities to carry out the Municipal Boundaries Re-Delineation Exercise that was initiated in 2012. This exercise was completed in the last quarter of the last fiscal year after an extensive period of consultation and sensitization sessions with key stakeholders, including the participating town councils, buffering village councils, area representatives, and the wider public.
The new delineation of these towns now aligns with their respective development and growth while providing the legal basis for management and administration and the delivery of municipal services whilst not compromising what is known and recognized as the existing boundaries of the buffering villages.
The previously established jurisdictions for the seven towns date back to the 1980s and 1990s, respectively.
The public is advised that a copy of the now revised town jurisdictions may be had via the declarations published in the Gazette or by accessing electronic copies of the new maps from the respective town councils and/or from the Department of Local Government.
The Ministry of Rural Transformation extends gratitude and appreciation to the Ministries of Natural Resources and Mining and the Attorney General for their technical support received during the completion of this exercise.
For further information, feel free to contact the Department of Local Government at telephone number 828-4287 or by mobile number 670-2643 or by email at clifford.king@labour.gov.bz.
