By Zoila Palma: The Central Bank of Belize has unveiled the designs for the new National Symbols Coin Series, introducing a fresh look for Belize’s coins while celebrating the nation’s identity and heritage.
The new series marks another step in modernizing Belize’s currency and complements the 2025 National Heroes banknote series, creating a unified national currency.
Minted by the Royal Canadian Mint, the coins feature designs inspired by Belize’s natural heritage, with the $1 coin prominently displaying the map of Belize and the remaining five denominations showcasing the country’s national symbols.
The new coins are scheduled to enter circulation in September 2026 and will circulate alongside the existing coins bearing the image of the late Queen Elizabeth II, which will remain valid legal tender.
The Central Bank emphasized that the public will not need to exchange or deposit their current coins, as the existing series will gradually be phased out through normal circulation. Once released, the coins will be distributed through commercial banks, credit unions and businesses across the country.
While maintaining the familiar sizes and general characteristics of the existing denominations, the new series introduces several updates.
These include a new metal composition designed to improve cost efficiency and durability, the use of nickel-plated and bronze-plated steel, and slight weight variations. In addition, the one-cent coin will feature a distinctive ten-sided edge, while the one-dollar coin will have a unique bronze appearance.
The Central Bank stressed that the new coin series does not affect the value of Belize’s currency, with the Belize dollar remaining fixed at BZ$2.00 to US$1.00.
To commemorate the launch, the bank will also issue a limited-edition painted 50-cent collector’s coin featuring the Mahogany Tree.
The commemorative coin will be sold exclusively as a commemorative item and will not enter general circulation.
