The book will be introduced by Mercedes López-Baralt (University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras), who describes, “With luminous intelligence and, at the same time, as clear as water, Ramón Luis Acevedo has spearheaded in our country, studies on Central American literature, on which he teaches courses and on which he has published three fundamental books.”

Ramón Luis Acevedo Marrero is a retired professor of Ibero-American and Puerto Rican literature from the Department of Hispanic Studies at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras, where he also served as director, and a professor at the Center for Advanced Studies of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. At both institutions, he has taught graduate courses in Caribbean, Central American, and Brazilian literature. In 1986, he received a Fulbright scholarship to serve as an advisor and visiting professor at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala. He also served as editor of the UPR’s Revista de Estudios Hispánicos [Journal of Hispanic Studies]. Currently, he chairs the Institute of Puerto Rican Literature and is a member of the Puerto Rican Academy of the Spanish Language.

Among his books are Augusto D’Halmar: novelista (1976), La novela centroamericana (1982), Los senderos del volcán: narrativa centroamericana contemporánea (1991), El discurso de la ambigüedad: la narrativa modernista hispanoamericana (2002), Del silencio al estallido: narrativa femenina puertorriqueña (1991), De la leyenda dorada: antología de escritores corozaleños (1996), Negros y mulatas en la literatura puertorriqueña (2015 y 2021), Contra viento y marea: narrativa de Puerto Rico (2019), and Antología crítica de la literatura puertorriqueña, Volume I (2007) and Volume II (2021).

Also valuable are his editions of the poetry and prose of Emilio Delgado, the short stories of Carmela Eulate Sanjurjo, the essay “Plácido” by Eugenio María de Hostos, the poetry collection Mi misa rosa by Arístides Moll Boscana; and the theater pieces La razón ciega by Gustavo Jiménez Sicardo, Estampas navideñas by Abelardo Díaz Alfaro, and Quíntuples by Luis Rafael Sánchez. Furthermore, his translations from Brazilian Portuguese should be noted, for example, Machado de Assis’s comedy Lección de botánica (2023) and the anti-slavery drama Madre (2024) by José de Alencar. For more than forty-five years, he has also been co-producer and co-host of the radio program Cultura Isleña, which airs weekly on ORO 92.5 FM and is one of the longest-running cultural programs on Puerto Rican radio.
