Description: The title of this book, Plan Bonito, refers to the neighborhood in Hormigueros where Filiberto Ojeda Ríos lived for many years with his wife, Elma Beatriz Rosado Barbosa. It was there that the FBI found him. At the time he was killed by a federal sniper, the only FBI fugitive in the world with a higher reward than Filiberto Ojeda Ríos was Osama bin Laden. The FBI surrounded and killed Ojeda Ríos, one of the most important figures in the pro-independence movement in Puerto Rico, on September 23, 2005. That day commemorates the Grito de Lares, the largest pro-independence uprising in the country’s history.
At the time, the author was working as a reporter and was assigned to gather reactions, interview relatives, and cover Ojeda Ríos’s funeral in his hometown of Naguabo. Now, 20 years after his death, the author remembers the figure of the guerrilla fighter trained in Fidel Castro’s Cuba and reconstructs, using documents and interviews, what happened on that violent day and the impact it had on the island. To this aim, he studied the four official reports that exist about what happened, conducted nearly a dozen interviews in different areas of Puerto Rico, and explored newspaper archives at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), as well as the house in Hormigueros, in the Plan Bonito sector, where the events took place.
