[Many thanks to Dorothy Bell Ferrer for bringing this writer to our attention!] Yurieth Romero’s Las visitantes [The Visitors] was published by Alfaguara in January 2025. Romero—a writer from Santa Marta, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast—is also the founder of La Caracola Films production company. Las visitantes is part of a transmedia project consisting of a book of short stories, a television series, and a film.

Paula Moreno writes, “In her literary debut, Yurieth Romero reveals the invisible prisons that define women’s daily lives. With intense and captivating prose, these pages capture the reader in the contradictions inherent in the yearning for freedom.”

Description: “Today we are here, waiting in line, same as always, one right next to the other. Hating each other but joined by the same circumstances.”

Chiara is a trans woman who dreams of a happy future with the man she loves. Rara is a sex worker that wants to go back to her hometown and bury her dead loved ones. Katerine with no “h” is a mother trying desperately to free her husband. They all exist at the margins of society and are related by a singular routine: on Sundays, they visit someone in jail. Their pilgrimage is shared by other Afro-Caribbean women like them, coming together in their weekly appointment to visit a son, a grandson, an ex-husband. And it’s at that gathering point where this book comes to life.

Through the stories that comprise this volume—recipient of the Unpublished Works Grant for Afro-Colombian Authors, by Colombia’s Ministry of Culture [Beca de Creación Inédita para Autoras Afrocolombianas] —Yurieth Romero digs into the world of these women, who are forever waiting. The result of her writing is a raw narrative and an act of resistance in the face of a peripheral violence that is also ours.

Yurieth Romero is an Afro-Colombian film and television writer and screenwriter born in Santa Marta, Colombia. As a screenwriter, she has co-written several award-winning series for public television in her country. She was a fellow of the Poder Étnica Audiovisual program of the Manos Visibles Corporation in the Master’s program in Cultural Management and Audiovisual Production at Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in Bogotá and is the founder of the production company La Caracola Films.
