Description: This study reviews the actions of sixteen women who participated in the struggle for independence of Puerto Rico during the first half of the 20th century. Fifteen of them were arrested for their intervention (real or alleged) in the 1950 insurrection in Puerto Rico or the attack on the United States Congress in 1954. Like the other Nationalists, these women identified with the teachings of Pedro Albizu Campos who stated that the struggle for independence was the continuation of the [heroic] acts that began in Lares in 1868. Because of their dedication to that ideal, these women were persecuted and suffered many years in prison. This work is dedicated to rescuing the history of their feats, which has largely been relegated to oblivion.
Olga Jiménez de Wagenheim is Professor Emerita in History, Rutgers University. She has published several books on Puerto Rico, including Puerto Rico: An Interpretive History from Pre-Columbian Times to 1900, Puerto Rico’s Revolt for Independence: El Grito de Lares, and Nationalist Heroines: Puerto Rican Women History Forgot, 1930s-1950s. She is also co-author of The Puerto Ricans: A Documentary History (Markus Wiener Publishers, 2023) with Luis Martínez-Fernández and Kal Wagenheim.
