I am overjoyed because, as an avid fan of her earlier work, I had the pleasure of discussing her novel Felices días, Tío Sergio [Happy Days, Uncle Sergio] and several of her essays in my courses through the years at Marist University. If only I had not retired… this would be a wonderful follow-up! This new book was launched on December 4, 2025, at Casa Kai (Escuela Segundo Ruiz Belvis, Fernández Juncos Avenue) in Santurce, Puerto Rico. The memoir was presented by Sylvia Álvarez Curbelo. A MEMOIR: Like the sailors of olden days who threw chains into the water from their ships, trying to touch the bottom of the seas to measure their depth, I am trying to reach the origins by searching back through documents, photos, and books. But with family histories it is impossible to reach the beginning, because they are lost in time immemorial. Therefore, we must begin with the “whys” of past generations, when our Mallorcan and Puerto Rican ancestors met on this island. At first, I thought it appropriate to begin with Grandfather Francisco arriving in 1899, but no, we must go back a little further. I place on my desk grandfather’s photograph, which my aunts always kept in the living room; I open the leather pouch that María Luisa carried when she went to draw blood from bedridden patients and see that it still contains slides, needles, and pipettes; I look at the lights in the olive grove in a Mallorcan oil painting that I hung on the wall; I place a stack of documents on the dining room table and begin to put them in chronological order: I have started a project that will captivate me for a quarter of my life.
