Caribecologías (UAM, Unidad Cuajimalpa, 2026) by C. Oliver Lozano Villanueva, is now available at Casa de Libros Abiertos-Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana.
Description: The essays and spoken-word pieces in this book arose between the cold of Tijuana beaches— just meters from the border wall— and the heat of the last territories annexed by the Mexican nation-state: Quintana Roo, a region where the Afro-Caribbean influences of Belize, Mayan culture, the Mexican Caribbean, and the Riviera Maya all coexist.
This project does not offer definitive answers; instead, it reflects a Caribbean sensibility that speaks to the meaning of home. It explores the significance of environmental presences in our lives— rejecting any duality between ourselves and nature— while placing the racialized body and memory in tension with the concept of mestizaje, which embraces the unique nature of the ecological crisis we are currently living through. Concepts such as “caribecologías,” “Caribealien,” “Afro-meteorological whispers” [susurros afrometeorológicos] or the “posmestizo” convey a specific way of experiencing life in relation to the world. They are paths charted amidst surging waves.
C. Oliver Lozano Villanueva (Chetumal, 1991) is an independent researcher, educator, and cultural manager. He is the creator of Lecturas del Trópico (LDT), a platform dedicated to developing activities that explore the intersections between the philosophy of nature, racism, Caribbean thought, and speculative writing. His work has appeared in various decentralized spaces across Mexico, the United States, and Brazil, as well as in the fanzine Siete mil ríos nos comunican and the books Sargazo: antología literaria de jóvenes escritores quintanarroenses and Rumores: epistemologías racializadas y saberes anticoloniales. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in cultural studies at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (Tijuana campus), with a project that analyzes the intersections between aesthetics, Caribbean science fiction literature, and futures.
