
As an affiliate of the Library of Congress’s Center for the Book, the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI) recently announced the 2026 selections for “Great Reads from Great Places.”
The “youth” selection is Broo ‘Nansi and Hummingbird, written by Mario Picayo, and illustrated by Raquel Picayo. CFVI writes, “Mario was born in Cuba and later moved to the Virgin Islands. In his story, Broo ’Nansi, a good-for-nothing fella, is back in a brand-new tale full of twists, turns, humor, and wisdom.” [See full description below.]
Description: Broo ’Nansi, that good-for-nothing fella, is back in a brand-new tale full of twists, turns, humor, and wisdom. The little spider has promised to make beautiful costumes for the upcoming carnival. Broo Tukuma is not sure that it is a good idea, but Sis Iwana wants to take the chance. Hummingbird seems to know something but is not telling.
