By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 25-year-old construction worker has avoided jail time but now owes the court $1,420 after changing his plea to guilty in a domestic dispute involving his aunt.

Shawn Humes, of Wagners Lane, Belize City, appeared before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday where he changed his previous not guilty plea to guilty for one count of aggravated assault and one count of threat of death against his aunt.

For those offenses, Humes was fined a total of $450 — $305 for aggravated assault and $105 for threat of death — and granted until November 21, 2026 to pay. In total, including other matters before the court, Humes now owes $1,420 in fines.

Initially, when he was arraigned on November 21, 2025, Humes faced four charges: aggravated assault, threat of death, and two counts of damage to property. The allegations included destruction of household items belonging to his aunt and grandmother, totaling $905 in damages.

At the time, Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison did not accept Humes’ guilty plea for the assault and threat charges due to his disagreement with the facts. He was subsequently offered bail of $2,000 but remained on remand at the Belize Central Prison after being unable to meet the conditions.

According to police, the incident occurred on November 19, 2025, at a residence on Wagners Lane. His aunt reported that she returned home and found her nephew shouting and insulting his grandmother.

When she intervened, the situation escalated. Humes allegedly hurled insults and became aggressive, throwing pint bottles that damaged a glass oven door, a 20-inch Samsung television, and a Lasko fan. Additional items, including a bureau and a pair of tennis shoes, were also damaged during the altercation.

His aunt told police she feared for her life as bottles were thrown in her direction, prompting her to call authorities.

Despite the seriousness of the allegations, Humes was handed non-custodial sentences and released from custody after resolving the matter in court.
