By Aaron Humes: Police have arrested and charged a Maya Beach, Stann Creek District man in connection with the murder of a local farm manager. Kisnett Kerney Picart, 47, has been charged with the murder of Rolando Cespedes, a 51-year-old Costa Rican national and the general manager of Fyffes banana farm.
The incident occurred at Cespedes’ apartment in the Maya Beach area around 8:30 a.m. Thursday. According to reports from police, they received information regarding a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers found Cespedes critically injured with multiple stab wounds. He was immediately transported to the Placencia Polyclinic, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Police indicated that the two men were neighbors and that Picart allegedly stabbed Cespedes a staggering 29 times. ASP Stacy Smith, a police staff officer, noted that the investigation began following the stabbing incident.
“…we do not have a motive at this time,” Smith stated. “…we believe that the suspect was familiar with the victim, given the proximity within which they reside. I cannot comment if the relationship was something more than that.”
When questioned about the relationship between Picart and Cespedes, Smith acknowledged the proximity of their residences but refrained from confirming any deeper connection or prior disputes between the two men. “I have confirmed that because of the proximity within which the suspect and the victim live, I’m not saying they’re neighbors, I’m just saying the proximity, it is suspected that they were familiar with each other. I cannot say if there was any previous history of dispute between them,” she added. Police have also recovered the suspected murder weapon.
