By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belmopan Trojans opened their 2026 NEBL season with a 80–74 victory over the Corozal Spartans on Saturday night at the UB Gymnasium, using a strong first half to build a cushion that proved just enough to withstand Corozal’s late push.
Belmopan set the tone early, taking the first quarter 22–18 before exploding for 31 points in the second period to carry a 53–42 halftime lead. Corozal tightened up defensively in the third quarter and cut into the deficit, but the Trojans held their nerve in the fourth to close out the six‑point win before a crowd of about 100 fans.
The Trojans were led by Jevaughn McKenzie, who delivered a standout performance with 23 points, shooting 7‑for‑11 from the field and 5‑for‑6 from the free‑throw line. Jarrel Velasquez added 20 points and 8 rebounds, while Kingsley Nwagboso contributed 9 points and 8 rebounds. Team captain Lisanie Lambey finished with 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists, and Elvert Ariola provided a valuable 10 points off the bench.
Belmopan dominated the boards 56–53, forced 23 turnovers, and scored 17 fast‑break points, helping them maintain control despite a quieter second half.
Corozal stayed competitive behind a balanced scoring effort. Kevin Jones led the Spartans with 15 points and 9 rebounds, while Isienie Velasquez added 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Tyron Baptist and Roy Blades each scored 8 and 9 points off the bench, contributing to Corozal’s 37 bench points. Ray Cruz added 9 points and 9 rebounds in the paint.
The Spartans made several runs, including a 16‑point surge that briefly cut the lead to single digits, but Belmopan’s early offensive burst ultimately proved decisive.
The Trojans join the San Pedro Tiger Sharks and Orange Walk Running Rebels as opening‑weekend winners. The EZ Investments Griga Dream Ballers were inactive and will debut in Week 2.
