By Zoila Palma:  Today, the National Women’s Commission issued a statement making a call for urgent action to end sexual abuse of children.

“As an organization committed to protecting the most vulnerable members of our society, we are calling on communities, institutions, and governments to take immediate, coordinated action to prevent abuse, support survivors, and hold perpetrators accountable,” the National Women’s Commission said.

“Child sexual abuse is a silent epidemic that thrives in secrecy and shame,” said Kristina Romero, Chairperson of the National Women’s Commission. “We must break the silence, confront the systems that enable abuse, and create a world where every child is safe, heard, and protected.”

The National Women’s Commission noted that in Belize, between 2023 and 2024 there were 108 reported cases of unlawful sexual intercourse, experts estimate that only 50% of child rape are ever reported.

“Sexual violence has serious short- and long-term physical, psychological and social consequences on the victims, as well as on their families and the community as a whole,” the commission added.

The National Women’s Commission makes a national call to action:

  1. Prevention Through Education: Implement age-appropriate, evidence-based education in schools to empower children and educate adults.
  2. Support for Survivors: Increase funding for trauma-informed services, including counselling, legal aid, and crisis intervention.
  3. Stronger Protections: Advocate for stricter laws, better enforcement, and institutional accountability.
  4. Community Engagement: Encourage open dialogue, training, and vigilance in every neighborhood, school, and place of worship.

The commission urges everyone-parents, educators, policymakers, and citizens-to join in promoting and advocating for the rights, safety and protection of girls and boys in Belize.
