By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Sports Council of Belize (NSC) and the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) have entered into a major partnership that will modernize football infrastructure across the country, beginning with a FIFA‑certified synthetic pitch at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan.

In a joint announcement on Monday, the NSC confirmed that the agreement will deliver “the supply and installation of a FIFA‑certified synthetic football pitch at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium, along with the expansion and modernization of synthetic playing surfaces at key sports facilities nationwide.” The project is expected to take six to eight months from procurement to completion.

Under the initiative, the Isidoro Beaton Football Field will be fully resurfaced to international standards. New FIFA‑quality synthetic turf will also be installed at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City and the Santa Elena Sports Complex in Cayo. Additional community‑based synthetic pitches are planned for Belize City, Orange Walk, and Punta Gorda, while the Faber’s Road Field and the Berger Community Field (both in Belize City) will be resurfaced with upgraded materials designed for heavy use.

At the launch of the 2026 National Elite Basketball League season, Minister of State in the Ministry of Sports Devin Daly also addressed the future of the Belize City MCC Grounds, noting that the historic venue will remain a natural‑grass field. However, he did not specify when the pitch will be ready to return to competitive football use.

The NSC described the partnership with the FFB as a transformative investment in Belize’s sporting future, noting that it “prioritizes safe, accessible, and high-quality spaces where young athletes can train, compete, and thrive.” The initiative also reflects a shared commitment to strengthening national sports infrastructure while promoting inclusivity and opportunity at the grassroots level.

All synthetic surfaces installed through the project will meet the latest FIFA Quality Turf standards and will undergo independent testing and certification, the statement said. The FFB will provide technical guidance and maintenance training to NSC ground staff to ensure long‑term sustainability.

The release underscored the broader social value of the investment, stating that “sport is more than competition. It is a powerful tool for youth development, social cohesion, and national unity.” By expanding access to modern, all‑weather facilities, the NSC and FFB aim to foster discipline, teamwork, leadership, and resilience among Belizean youth, while positioning the country to host more regional and international events.

The NSC expressed its appreciation to the FFB for its technical leadership and collaboration in bringing the nationwide project to fruition.
