By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Sports Council of Belize (NSC) and the Belize Basketball Federation (BBF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that strengthens collaboration in the use and development of indoor and outdoor sporting facilities across the country. The NSC described the agreement as “a significant step forward in the collaborative development and utilization of indoor and outdoor sporting facilities across Belize.”
According to a joint press release by the NSC and BBF, the MOU establishes a framework for the joint use, management, and multi‑sport adaptation of six courts, ensuring they can effectively serve basketball, volleyball, and other NSC‑approved sporting activities. According to the release, the partnership “establishes a framework for cooperation between the NSC and BBF for the joint use, management, and multi-sport adaptation of six (6) courts.” However, the statement did not disclose which specific courts will be adapted for multi‑sport use.
The BBF said the agreement establishes “a strong collaboration for the development of our sport and athletes.”
The agreement comes as the Ministry of Sports has committed to assisting the National Elite Basketball League (NEBL), which tips off on February 21 with seven teams. The timing emphasizes the Ministry’s wider effort to improve basketball infrastructure, expand access, and support the sport’s development from grassroots to elite levels.

Through the MOU, the NSC reaffirmed its commitment to maximizing the use of national sports infrastructure, noting that the agreement supports “promoting greater accessibility for athletes, and fostering stronger coordination among national sporting associations.” The partnership also reflects a shared dedication to supporting youth, community, and elite athlete development through improved access to quality playing spaces.
Under the terms of the MOU, the NSC will coordinate scheduling and facility access among basketball, volleyball, and other disciplines to ensure fair and equitable use aligned with national sports priorities. The BBF will utilize the courts for its sanctioned activities while “cooperating fully with NSC scheduling arrangements and adhering to facility rules and standards.”
The NSC views the partnership as a meaningful investment in Belize’s sporting future, stating that it “strengthens collaboration, optimizes infrastructure use, and expands opportunities for athletes at all levels.” The Sports Council added that it looks forward to working closely with the BBF to ensure the courts function as “dynamic spaces for competition, training, and community engagement.”
