National Meteorological Service warns of drier conditions, drought risk as El Niño impacts Belize

By Zoila Palma:  The National Meteorological Service of Belize is warning that Belize could experience drier-than-normal conditions during the 2026 wet season as the country continues to feel the influence of El Niño.

The outlook indicates reduced rainfall between June and September, along with potentially prolonged dry spells, although periods of intense rainfall remain possible.

Forecasters note that Belize could also experience short bursts of heavy rainfall capable of causing flash flooding, despite the overall trend toward drier conditions.

The National Met Service says northern Belize is already under a Drought Watch, with the risk that drought conditions could worsen as the country approaches the next dry season.

The projected conditions could have significant implications across several sectors.

In the energy sector, reduced rainfall could lower hydropower generation while higher temperatures increase electricity demand.

In health, prolonged heat may contribute to dehydration, heat exhaustion and other health impacts, while warmer and drier conditions could increase risks associated with vector-borne diseases such as dengue.

The outlook also highlights concerns for food security and agriculture, including reduced crop and livestock productivity, increased pest and disease pressures and potential impacts on fisheries. These conditions could contribute to higher food prices, greater pressure on households and increased reliance on imports.

The National Met Service is encouraging Belizeans to conserve water, prepare for changing weather conditions and remain informed.

In addition, while El Niño increases the likelihood of drier conditions, heavy downpours can still occur highlighting the need for communities to prepare for both drought and flash-flood risks.
