By Zoila Palma: The National Meteorological Service (NMS), under the Ministry of the Public Service, Governance, and Disaster Risk Management, has received US$60,000 worth of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment to enhance its ability to monitor, analyze, and communicate weather and climate information.

The donation was made possible through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA)-funded project “Enabling Belize’s Statistical System,” implemented in partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Minister of the Public Service, Governance, and Disaster Risk Management Henry Charles Usher, emphasized that the investment will play a vital role in strengthening Belize’s resilience to climate hazards. “This equipment will strengthen the capacity of the National Meteorological Service to monitor and predict hazardous weather and climate conditions,”

Minister Usher said. “It is critical that we are able to utilize weather and climate data not only in our early warning efforts when a hazard is on our doorstep, but also in our strategic planning and decision-making processes.”

WFP Belize Head of Office Frances Walker, underscored that the contribution supports a broader effort to enhance the country’s multi-hazard early warning systems. “This investment is more than just hardware and training; it is a step forward in enabling the NMS to enhance its forecasting capabilities and unlock the full potential of multi-hazard early warning systems,” she said.

The donation includes computers, videography equipment, and ICT tools to improve data collection, forecasting accuracy, and coordination with agencies such as the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO). The Ministry expressed gratitude to KOICA, the UNDP, and WFP for their continued support in building Belize’s disaster resilience.
