By Zoila Palma: The National Medical Commission (NMC) of India has issued a strong advisory warning Indian students against enrolling in four foreign medical institutions, including three in Belize and one in Uzbekistan.
The advisory, released by the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB), lists Central American Health and Sciences University, Columbus Central University, and Washington University of Health and Sciences in Belize, as well as the Chirchik Branch of Tashkent State Medical University in Uzbekistan, as non-compliant with Indian medical education standards.
Students enrolled in these institutions risk being disqualified from medical registration in India.
This move comes in response to reports from the Indian Embassy in Mexico and the Ministry of External Affairs’ Eurasia Division, which raised red flags over several issues.
These include lack of proper campus infrastructure, poor quality of teaching and clinical training, instances of student harassment, excessive fees, and refusal to issue refunds.
Despite repeated warnings in August 2023 and November 2024, the NMC noted that many Indian students continue to pursue admissions in such non-compliant institutions abroad.
The Commission emphasized that any discrepancies in course structure, duration, medium of instruction, clinical training, or internship may result in disqualification from medical registration in India, as outlined in the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiates (FMGL) Regulations, 2021. Students are strongly urged to thoroughly research and verify the credentials of foreign institutions before seeking admission.
In contrast to the institutions flagged by the NMC, the University of Belize has recently launched its School of Medicine, which has successfully met all required certification standards.
The new program aims to offer high-quality medical education aligned with international best practices and regulatory compliance.
The University has announced that the final sitting for the August 2025 intake of its Qualifying Entrance and Scholarship Examination (QESE) will take place on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
Prospective students are encouraged to seize the opportunity and apply now to begin their journey toward a career in medicine.
