By Zoila Palma:  On March 3, 2026, historian Matthew Restall delivered an insightful lecture on the origins of the name Belize at the University of Belize Conference Center in Belmopan.

The lecture featured welcome remarks from Delmer Tzib, History Lecturer at UB, followed by remarks from Albert Vaughn, President of the National Institute of Culture and History, and closing remarks by Rolando Cocom, Director of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research (NICH ISCR).

Professor Restall presented an engaging lecture of Belize’s early history from the Maya civilizations and Spanish encounters to colonial rivalries and the enduring debates surrounding the nation’s name.

Challenging the long-held Peter Wallace origin myth, Restall shared interesting new evidence to support his claim that the origin of the name Belize may derive from “Bel Itza,” meaning the road or way to the Itza.

The lecture was hosted by the National Institute of Culture and History in partnership with the University of Belize and the Belize Archives and Records Service.
