By Zoila Palma: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring three weather disturbances across the Atlantic, with one system having a 60 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression over the next seven days.
The first disturbance is located a few hundred miles south of the Cabo Verde Islands and is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. The system is expected to move westward and merge with a tropical wave currently over West Africa. The NHC gives it a 20 percent chance of formation within 48 hours and a 60 percent chance within seven days.
A second disturbance, associated with a tropical wave in the central tropical Atlantic, is located roughly midway between West Africa and the Lesser Antilles. Some gradual development is possible through midweek as it moves westward, but unfavorable upper-level winds are expected to limit development later in the week. It has a 10 percent chance of formation over both the next 48 hours and seven days.
The third disturbance is a trough of low pressure located several hundred miles northwest of Bermuda. It is expected to move eastward north of Bermuda, with a 10 percent chance of development over the next 48 hours and seven days.
The NHC said the system is expected to reach cooler waters later this week, ending its chances of development after Wednesday.
