By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Benque Viejo del Carmen is buzzing with excitement as the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) Football Championship gets underway at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 21. Hosted by Mount Carmel High School, the event will feature the best young footballers from across the country, with new champions set to emerge this year.
The championship, which kicks off Friday and ends Saturday, features intense competition between both boys’ and girls’ teams. With neither of the 2024 champions participating this year, the titles are wide open for the taking. The Muffles College boys, who won the competition in 2024, are not in this year as they were eliminated in the Northern Regional Tournament with Belize High School of Agriculture prevailing as regional champions. Similarly, the girls’ champions, Belmopan Comprehensive, will not be participating as Sacred Heart College from San Ignacio advanced from the Western Region.
The first day of the tournament will see four thrilling matches:
- Game 1 (Girls): George Town Technical High School vs. Corozal Community College
- Game 2 (Boys): Julian Cho Technical High School vs. Belize High School of Agriculture
- Game 3 (Girls): Pallotti High School vs. Sacred Heart College
- Game 4 (Boys): Gwen Lizarraga High School vs. Belmopan Comprehensive School
The winners play for the championship on Saturday. The teams that lose on Friday play for third place.
Action kicks off on Friday at 2:00 pm and resumes on Saturday at 8:30 am. The award ceremony will be held immediately after the final game on Saturday.
