By Zoila Palma: The National Evangelical Association of Belize (NEAB) has issued a statement warning that the proposed acquisition of Speednet by Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) would result in a national telecommunications and telemedia monopoly.
NEAB said that it stands in solidarity with other social partners who have raised concerns about the deal and its potential impact on competition and consumers in Belize.
NEAB argued that the acquisition would not benefit the Belizean public, but instead serve the interests of political insiders.
The association identified 2 major “deal breakers”: the creation of a monopoly in the telecommunications sector and what it described as clear conflicts of interest among political decision-makers involved in the process.
The association further emphasized that even measures such as lower pricing, full disclosure, or broader public consultation would not change its opposition to a monopoly structure.
While noting its ongoing partnership with both social partners and the Government of Belize, NEAB said it believes it has a responsibility to speak out when national interests are at stake.
NEAB further reaffirmed its position that the proposed acquisition is not in the best interest of Belize.
