By Aaron Humes, Belmopan: The National Assembly Building on Independence Hill is almost ready for its close-up.
It will play host to a Joint Sitting of the National Assembly on February 2, addressed by President of Guyana Dr Irfaan Ali.
On a “dry run” tour of the building to which the press was invited this afternoon, Speaker of the House of Representatives Valerie Woods said the space was “modernized” while keeping most of the aesthetics put in place 50 years ago.
An elevator has been put in place at either end of the building and accessible spaces put in for the physically disabled, along with LED light fixtures and television screens. The public galleries have been increased to 102 seats on either side of the chamber and bathrooms have been added at each level.
For the press, the cramped gallery has been somewhat improved.
Funding for the project was provided by the Republic of China (Taiwan).
A formal tour is expected to be conducted in the first week of February, between the State Visit of Dr Ali and the first meeting of the House of Representatives.
