By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Orange Walk’s Mi Gente of Guinea Grass played to a 2-2 stalemate against the EZ Griga Conquerors in the first leg of the National Amateur Interdistrict Championship (NAIC) Semifinals on Sunday, August 4 at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk.
Aaron Estero opened the scoring in the fifth minute for the visiting Griga Conquerors. Francisco Rivas leveled the score at 1-1 in the 45th minute as the first half ended.
As the second half kicked off, Griga Conquerors struck again with a Darrol Lambey goal in the 47th minute. Mi Gente responded, converting the 2-2 equalizer through the efforts of Justin Cardenas in the 63rd minute.
With the 2-2 deadlocked score, Griga Conquerors have the advantage as they will be home for the return match on Saturday at 7:30 pm at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga.
Mi Gente qualified for the NAIC Semifinals by defeating the Calcutta Bulls 6-5 on aggregate score. They first drew 2-2 in Corozal before Mi Gente edged Calcutta 4-3 in the return in Orange Walk.
The EZ Griga Conquerors defeated Belmopan’s Napoles 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the second leg of the Quarterfinals after a 4-4 aggregate score. Napoles won the first leg 2-1, but Griga clinched the return 3-2.
