By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a show of solidarity, runners from across Belize will lace up for Racing for Little Nathanael’s Health 5K, a fundraiser organized by sisters Roxy and Glendy in support of young Nathanael, who is bravely battling stage 4 cancer.
The event is set for Sunday, August 10, 2025, with an early 6:00 am start from the Santa Familia Police Station in the Cayo District. Participants will take on a 5-kilometer route, mostly along gravel terrain, winding through village roads before turning at the 2.5K mark and returning to the start.
Proceeds from the $10 entry fee—along with any additional contributions from the community—will go directly toward covering the family’s medical expenses. While it’s a race, organizers emphasize that this is more about compassion than competition.
Those unable to attend in person may opt for the virtual challenge, open on August 9 and 10. Virtual runners won’t be eligible for medals but will receive a race bib as a token of gratitude. A $10 administrative fee applies to switches between in-person and virtual entries.
Registration closes Thursday, August 7 at 5:30 pm, after which a late fee will apply. Runners are reminded that impersonating absent registrants will lead to automatic disqualification.
Top finishers in the Men’s and Women’s Open categories will receive medals in a short award ceremony following the race. Hydration will be available at the U-turn checkpoint, and participants are encouraged to prepare for varied terrain, ranging from dry dust to mud and water holes, depending on weather.
No t-shirts will be issued—keeping the focus squarely on the fundraising mission for Nathanael and his family.
For those who can’t run, organizers urge community members to show up in support, donate, or help spread the word.
