By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Napoles FC opened the 2025–2026 Premier League of Belize Closing Championship with a hard‑fought 2–1 victory over Belmopan FC on Saturday night at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan.
Napoles struck first in the 38th minute when #14 Jalen Myers converted from the penalty spot, giving the visitors a 1–0 lead that they carried into halftime. Belmopan pushed for an equalizer early in the second half, but Napoles doubled their advantage in the 58th minute through #19 Gabriel Ramos, who finished a well‑timed attacking move to make it 2–0.
Belmopan responded with urgency and pulled one back in the 70th minute when #11 Jahiem Mena found the back of the net, setting up a tense final 20 minutes. Despite sustained pressure from the hosts, Napoles held firm defensively to secure all three points in the league’s opening match.
The PLB Opening Weekend continues Sunday with two more fixtures: Progresso FC host Capital Sport Club (Benque United FC franchise) at the People’s Stadium at 3:30 pm, and Port Layola FC welcome Wagiya SC to the Marion Jones Sports Complex at 4:00 pm. Reigning champions Verdes FC begin their title defense against Wagiya next weekend at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen.
