By Breaking Belize News Staff: A man caught on camera breaking into attorney Audrey Matura’s property has been set free after a bizarre case in which his true identity could not be determined. He first claimed he was a 75 year old man but police could not establish his identity. A woman even came to court claiming to be his mother, alleging he has a mental condition but he told the court his mother was dead. Interestingly, until we spoke with her, Matura wasn’t even aware the case had been dropped.

What began as a straightforward theft case involving well-known attorney-at-law Audrey Matura has ended in confusion and controversy, after a man accused of stealing from her home was set free when the court failed to confirm his true identity. Matura, speaking to Breaking Belize News, said the system had failed. She cited provisions in the law for accused persons to be remanded to prison while a psychiatric evaluation is ordered and indeed we have reported numerous such cases on this site.

“It’s not only a failure to me, it’s a failure to who will be his next victim and it’s a failure of the system so I am more than disappointed. I hope that when I take steps to defend myself, I am given the same lean treatment that he has been given,” Matura told BBN

The man, known to police as Raymond Moody, appeared before the Senior Magistrate in Court #6 on Thursday to face a charge of theft. However, the man insisted that his name was Lavender Kendale. He told police he was 75 years old, and that he was born in 1950—contradicting police records which listed him as 22-year-old “Raymond Moody”.

The curious case began on Monday, October 20, 2025, when Matura reported that someone had entered her Belama property, near the Belama police sub station. Matura told police that she was asleep when her alarm went off. Upon checking, she found the driver’s side door of her Jeep open. Her house keys, which she had left in the vehicle, had been moved. She later discovered them on the passenger seat along with other documents and a roll of toilet paper from her glove compartment. At one point in the footage, the intruder was even seen taking a nap on Matura’s steps.

Home surveillance footage reportedly captured the intruder, and Matura later identified the suspect as he returned to her home later that day. Upon seeing him, Matura alerted nearby police and took photos of him, leading to his apprehension and arrest.

At Thursday’s initial hearing, the accused appeared confused and disoriented, prompting the Senior Magistrate to pause the arraignment. When questioned, he gave inconsistent responses, at one point claiming his mother was dead. However, police later contacted a woman and a man believed to be his mother and brother, both living on Caye Caulker, who confirmed that the accused suffers from a mental health condition and sometimes uses different names.

Due to the confusion surrounding his identity and mental fitness, the Senior Magistrate remanded him overnight to the Belize Central Prison, hoping that more information would emerge by Friday morning.

The next day, however, the situation only grew stranger. A woman claiming to be his mother appeared in court on Friday but he insisted to the court that his mother is dead and his only given name is Lavender Kendale.

And so, despite being clearly seen on the security footage and Matura’s 4-page report with photos, the case collapsed due to the unresolved mystery surrounding the accused man’s true identity and his mental status. In her wisdom, the Senior Magistrate ruled that justice could not proceed and the charge could not even be read to him so she dismissed the theft charge against him altogether, setting him free and putting him back on the street.

He was reportedly seen leaving court with a woman in pink, the same woman who claimed to be his mother in court. Deepening the mystery, she could only produce identification documents for herself but brought none for the man she claimed as her son. And while he denied she was his mother, clearly he knew her well enough to leave court with her.

So for now at least, the man known as Raymond Moody or Lavender Kendale, walks among us.
