Museum of Belizean music also to be featured at House of Culture, Belize City

By Aaron Humes: During Wednesday’s opening of the new Museum of Belizean Art (MOBA) at the former Government House, now the House of Culture in Belize City, Minister of Education and Culture Francis Fonseca announced their plans were not done, and that the structure would come alive with the sound of music – Belizean music to be precise.

“Our plans won’t stop on the ground floor where the museum is situated. We are planning to utilize the upstairs space for a music museum. This music museum will feature 100 years of Belize’s music history, inclusive of the recording technology over that time; the hundreds of musicians who must make up our hall of fame; and sample songs representing the root lines of our musical DNA,” Fonseca said, further noting that the old Government House space had been transformed from a showcase of colonial perspective, to one of Belizean history.

Fonseca told XTV News (formerly KREM News) that the Belize Music Project led by producer Ivan Duran is documenting the history to be featured in this museum and mentioned that he had been listening to some of it himself: “I’ve listened to some of the music from 100 years ago and it’s fantastic if you listen to it in the studio – amazing. It tells a rich history and story of Belize’s development and Belize’s rich, diverse culture, through music.”
