By Aaron Humes: Only three murders were reported in April per Police Department statistics, but something went wrong during the handover from Chester Williams to Dr Richard Rosado at its end.
Within hours of that handover, a series of murders and other activity would force the Government’s hand to issue a State of Emergency for parts of Belize City, Belize Rural and the Cayo District.
It started with the murder of Carlos Avelar on Labour Day on Coney Drive in a quiet corner of the Northside, when he was ridden up to and shot.
But on the Southside, an attack on Jimmy Rojas in the Lake I area would result in a chain of retaliations across the Belize District, with killings of 3 Belize City men, Aaron Lindo, Nelson Henry and Kadeem Orosco within just 30 hours in different areas – along the Belize River Valley Road, in Ladyville and in the City near Mopan Street.
Three days after the declaration, a San Pedro man was targeted for robbery in Belize City which escalated to murder, Zinedine Pinelo. Two men were subsequently arrested in his killing.
Later in the month, 24-year-old Moises Garbutt turned up dead in Belmopan after going missing, as did James Mendez in Orange Walk. Finally in the Toledo District, there was the shocking killing of Medina Bank village Alcalde Romano Cal, for which his brother Rafael has been charged.
