By Aaron Humes: Beris Nehemaya Anglin, 45, was found shot to death inside his home on Progress Street overnight on Saturday into Sunday. The chilling discovery was made by Anglin’s common-law wife shortly after midnight on December 7, when she returned from work to find the front door ajar. Upon entering, she was met with her partner motionless on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds.
According to reports, the sound of gunfire echoed through the area around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, with neighbors hearing at least fourteen shots fired. Despite the proximity of the police station, it reportedly took law enforcement over an hour to respond after the shots were heard.
Today, Police Department Staff Officer Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith said police have since detained one person of interest, whom they will interview to see if he can assist with the investigation. Anglin, she said, “is known to police. As a matter of fact, he was charged just a few hours prior for a drug-related offense. He was given ‘station bail’ and was to go before the Magistrate’s Court today.”
Anglin is the son of the late George Anglin, who was found stabbed to death about 19 years ago in a shed on Progress Street. He, among others, was charged for that incident, but the case did not make it to trial. He was also suspected in a later bust of marijuana in Orange Walk involving a female police officer.
