By Zoila Palma: In January 2023, Mount Carmel R.C. Primary School made a historic leap toward inclusive education by opening its doors to children with special needs. The program began with 14 students with diverse abilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Apraxia, Dandy-Walker Syndrome, and Visual Impairment.
Spearheading this initiative was Mrs. Mckenna Choj, a dedicated Special Education teacher. In September 2023, she was joined by fellow specialist Mrs. Nancy Pat Casimiro. Both educators bring professional training and experience in Special Education, providing students with expert guidance and support.
The special education class at Mount Carmel is unique in its approach, offering customized instruction based on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). With a modified curriculum and specialized services tailored to each student’s needs, the program aims to help children reach their full potential—academically, socially, and personally.
Over the past two years, students have shown remarkable progress. Many have successfully transitioned into regular classrooms, becoming more independent and actively involved in school life.
This year, the school proudly celebrates three major accomplishments:
Benzel Salazar is bidding farewell to Mount Carmel as he prepares to enter high school.
Hamza Pacheco is the program’s first graduate, having achieved all his IEP goals and fully integrated into the general classroom.
Anthony Perez has also met his IEP milestones and will now transition into the general education environment.
These achievements reflect the hard work, commitment, and collaboration of the students, their families, and the dedicated teaching staff—both in general and special education.
Mount Carmel R.C. Primary continues to serve as a shining example of how inclusive education can change lives, offering every child the chance to thrive.
