Motorcyclist injured in Belize City collision at Hibiscus Street intersection

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police are investigating a traffic accident that occurred on Hibiscus Street in Belize City on Saturday afternoon.

According to initial reports, the collision happened at approximately 3:50 p.m. and involved a motorcycle and a sport utility vehicle.

Investigators say 22-year-old Eduardo Enrique Portillo Jr. was riding a black 2024 Lifan motorcycle along Causarina Street when he approached the intersection with Hibiscus Street and made a left turn.

Portillo reported that while turning, he observed a gray GMC Terrain SUV traveling along Hibiscus Street. In an attempt to avoid a collision, he reportedly swerved and jumped from the motorcycle. However, he still collided with the oncoming vehicle, causing the motorcycle to fall onto the roadway.

The SUV was being driven by 33-year-old Melissa Vashanti Straker Martinez of Ladyville.

Police reported that the SUV sustained minor damage, including a broken section of the front grille and scrapes to the front bumper.

The motorcycle suffered more extensive damage, including a bent front fork, damaged gear shifter, broken rear-view mirror, displaced seat, and bent front fender.

Traffic support personnel responded to the scene where measurements were taken, photographs were collected, and statements were recorded from both drivers.

Officials also served Notices of Intended Prosecution to both motorists as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police say surveillance camera footage from the area has not yet been reviewed and the investigation remains ongoing.
