Motorcycle rider killed after slamming into San Estevan roundabout

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Melquir Antonio Westby, a 37 year old labourer of Palmar Village, died early Friday morning after crashing his motorcycle into the San Estevan roundabout.

Police responded to the scene around 12:30am and found Westby face upward on the grass of the roundabout with an open wound to the right knee, an open wound to the back of the head, and blood coming from the mouth and both ears.

About 28 feet away lay a black Lifan motorcycle on its left side facing Orange Walk Town, with a broken right rear view mirror and a bent handlebar.

Initial investigation revealed that around 12:15am Westby was travelling on San Estevan Road from Orange Walk Town toward the bypass when he collided with the roundabout, was thrown from the motorcycle and landed on the grass.

He was escorted to the Northern Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:40am.

Records show Westby held a valid Belize driver’s licence and the motorcycle was licensed and insured.

The motorcycle was escorted to the Orange Walk Police Station awaiting inspection. His body awaits a postmortem.
